Compress image: what it's for
Phone and camera photos are much heavier than a website, email or form needs. Compressing saves JPGs and WEBPs at a slightly lower quality (barely noticeable) and moves PNGs to an optimised colour palette. Metadata such as GPS location is removed too.
Frequently asked questions
Will I notice the difference?
With recommended compression, usually not to the naked eye. High gives smaller files but can show in gradients and fine detail. If an image was already optimised, you get the original back, never a bigger file.
Do the pixel dimensions change?
No: the dimensions and format stay the same. To make the image smaller in pixels, use “Resize image”.
Is it safe to upload my files?
Your files are only used for the conversion and are deleted automatically after 60 minutes. They're never shared with anyone.
